Brazil Project

The presentation of Polish culture in Brazil in 2016 is the Adam Mickiewicz Institute’s first comprehensive project in South America. The starting point for building the programme was a grounding in the common Polish-Brazilian heritage that developed as a result of relationships between outstanding representatives of the two cultures. Poles who have left their mark on Brazilian culture include Zbigniew Ziembiński, Yanka Rudzka, Lucjan Korngold and Jorge Zalszupin. In the context of an exchange of influences, it’s impossible to overlook the work of the theatre directors Jerzy Grotowski and Tadeusz Kantor, and filmmaker Krzysztof Kieślowski. History shows that a meeting of two distant worlds can yield uncommon effects, which to this day remain full of freshness and the power to enchant audiences. In 2016, we hope to create the opportunity for further meetings, which will give a new impetus to Polish-Brazilian relations and lay the groundwork for further exchanges of inspirations.

Brazil Project, which includes various fields of art and interdisciplinary projects, arose in co-operation with institutions including Sesc São Paulo, Instituto Tomie Ohtake, Centro Cultural São Paulo, Casa do Povo, Mostra Internacional de Teatro de São Paulo (MITsp), VIVADANÇA Festival Internacional in Salvador da Bahia, Tempo_Festival in Rio de Janeiro, Museu de Arte Moderna in Rio de Janeiro and the Embassy of the Republic of Poland in Brazil.

In 2014 the Adam Mickiewicz Institute supported Polish artists’ participation in the Art Biennial, and in 2015 we presented a landmark exhibition for the 100th anniversary of the birth of Tadeusz Kantor, in co-operation with Sesc São Paulo.

Key events in 2016 include a performance of (A)pollonia, directed by Krzysztof Warlikowski at MITsp; the project Yanka Rudzka: Zaczyn at VIVADANÇA Festival Internacional; the film programme Wajda Turns 90 at CineSesc; Iza Tarasewicz’s participation in the São Paulo Art Biennial; Jakub Szczęsny’s project Bom Retiro in Casa do Povo; a joint concert by Mitch&Mitch (PL) and Orquestra Imperial (BR); Polish theatre events during Tempo_Festival in Rio de Janeiro and a Krzysztof Kieślowski retrospective at CineSesc.
