Is it possible for a single person speaking in a
dispassionate voice, with almost no acting
expression,
to rivet the attention of the discerning
audience
at Russia’s biggest theatre festival? It turns
out the answer is yes.

ojtek Ziemilski is the grandson
of Count Wojciech Dzieduszycki,
known as Tunio, a worthy citizen of Wrocław,
singer, cabaret artist, contributor to many
cultural activities and engineer. In 2006
the Institute of National Remembrance
revealed that this man admired by everyone
in Wrocław had been a collaborator of the

communist secret police – the SB and UB
– and had written more than 400 reports
for them. The documentation was powerful
and Dzieduszycki himself confessed to his
infamous collaboration. It was a huge shock to
Wrocław’s cultural community, and an even
greater one to the count’s family. “Ziemilski
has managed an extraordinary feat. He has
told us his own story, so very important and
beguilingly unique. He spits into our faces all
the bitterness that has accumulated in him
since 2006 and is still accumulating. At the
same time, he has managed to generalize it,
reduce it to a collective experience, prove to
us that his story is also our story.” (
