Reading CzesławMilosz’s
poems was a breakthrough
moment in my life
Siergiej Jurski
“I wanted to select the poems
that were the most suggestive.
Those that would hook even
casual listeners from the very first,
get stuck in their head and force
them to listen again,” admitted
the Belarusian poet Andriej
Chadanowicz.
Among the notable figures
reciting and delivering their own
interpretations of the poems
were also renowned actors such
as the French film star Michael
Lonsdale, José Luis Gómez, who
is known from the films of Pedro
Almodovar, and Stephen Fry. For
the distinguished British actor,
reading the poems was a great
pleasure.
The audiobook reached a very
broad spectrum of listeners
through its distribution as an
insert in literary magazines (

– Ukraine;
The
Times Literary Supplement
– UK;

– Russia;

a daily newspaper (

– Spain),
a volume of poetry (
CzeslawMilosz
- Gedichten's
available in Belgium
and the Netherlands), and in the
Polish/German magazine
Dialog.
The audiobook was also promoted
during a conference dedicated
to the work of CzesławMiłosz in
London and Brussels, at book fairs
in Antwerp and Moscow, and at
a literature festival in Berlin.
CzesławMiłosz stands on the side of life for me …
even where he has to fight his way through pain
and despair. I am deeply moved by the depth of
his words which describe the abominations of
violence; and yet, over and over again, he draws
extraordinary power from the fight and the
lightness of being …
