WILHELM SASNAL SOLO EXHIBITION
AT THE WHITECHAPEL GALLERY
whitechaPel gallery, london
october 2011 – January 2012
TheWilhelm Sasnal exhibition
at this revered gallery not only
attracted throngs of viewers but
also garnered very favourable
reviews in the British press. Giving
the exhibition the highest possible
five stars,
The Independent’s
art
critic wrote “... there's sublime
beauty here, and sweet oblivion,
too.”
The Guardian
and
Time Out
both gave the show four stars. “...
one can't help but be impressed
by the sheer skill and versatility of
the artist's practice,” commented
the latter.
The London show featured more
than 60 works from private and
museum collections all over the
world. We saw Sasnal as a close
observer of the contemporary
universe, with the exhibition also
confirming that there is nothing
obvious in this artist’s work. There
are media-inspired paintings
betraying some very heavy
historical subject matter, mingled
with genre scenes and charming
landscapes.
the whitechapel Gallery in
London’s east end could well
be called the most important
art institution in europe. “it’s
the mount everest of the art
world,” explains Joanna
kiliszek, deputy director of
the adammickiewicz
institute.
