From 17 January to 29 March 2026, the Zachęta Project Room in Warsaw presents the latest video installation by Agnieszka Mastalerz “Reszta / Remainder”. In this work, the artist confronts the relationships between the human body and modernist architecture through movement, perception, and interpretation. The installation was created as part of an artistic residency at Akademie Schloss Solitude in Stuttgart, carried out in cooperation with the Ujazdowski Castle Centre for Contemporary Art and with the support of the Adam Mickiewicz Institute.

Le Corbusier and the Doppelhaus in Stuttgart – modernist heritage through the perspective of a Polish artist

Agnieszka Mastalerz is a visual artist who has gained experience in, among other places, Braunschweig, Hamburg, and Malmö. In her practice she examines mechanisms of control and processes that shape the individual, using a poetic visual language to analyse relationships in the intimate, social, political, and environmental spheres. She works primarily with video, combining scientific imagery with performative elements. Her works have been presented in numerous institutions and festivals in Poland and abroad, including MOCAK, the National Museum in Warsaw, MAXXI in Rome, Palazzo Strozzi in Florence, Deichtorhallen in Hamburg, the NS-Dokumentationszentrum in Munich, and as part of Manifesta 14 in Prishtina.

In her latest installation Agnieszka Mastalerz enters into a critical dialogue with the ideals of modernist architecture from nearly a century ago. The starting point – and the film set – is an experimental housing complex built in 1927 in Stuttgart as part of an exhibition by the German Werkbund (Deutscher Werkbund). The footage was recorded in the Doppelhaus, a semi-detached house designed by Le Corbusier and Pierre Jeanneret, which today houses the Weissenhofmuseum im Haus Le Corbusier. An important reference point for the concept of the installation is also the Modulor – a proportional system developed by Le Corbusier, based on the dimensions of a male body 183 cm tall, intended to serve the harmonious design of space, interiors, and furniture.

“Reszta / Remainder” at the Zachęta Project Room – three channels of movement, perception, and choreography

In “Reszta / Remainder” the artist analyses contemporary ways of experiencing the architectural legacy of Le Corbusier and Jeanneret, using somatic perspectives and body-based working strategies. She treats the Doppelhaus as a space for contemporary exploration of movement, scale, and perception. She critically engages with the concept of the Modulor while simultaneously exploring the interiors with the participation of young performers from the Staatliche Akademie der Bildenden Künste Stuttgart, alongside a professional choreographer and performer.

The installation by Agnieszka Mastalerz presented in Warsaw takes the form of a three-channel video installation that investigates the relationships between the human body and modernist architecture through movement, perception, and interpretation. Each channel examines a different aspect of the relationship between the body and the architecture of the Doppelhaus: from a static recording of interiors filmed by a slowly rotating camera at eye level of the model Modulor body, through a dynamic, improvised performance by students exploring the space through movement and touch, to an intimate choreography by Rachel Gill in the claustrophobic maid’s room and narrow corridors of the building, where the hidden hierarchy of the modernist house – absent from its representative image – is revealed.
