The Adam Mickiewicz Institute commissioned to compose works for the “Warsaw Autumn” festival

The 67th edition of the “Warsaw Autumn” International Festival of Contemporary Music (“Festival”) starts on 20 September 2024. The partnership between the Adam Mickiewicz Institute and the Festival has led to the commissioning the composition of four new works for the Ensemble Modern and Basel Sinfonietta. Two of the works will be performed on 22 September during a concert at the “Warsaw Autumn” Music Festival.

The “Warsaw Autumn” International Festival of Contemporary Music

The “Warsaw Autumn” is an international festival dedicated to contemporary music and it has been organised continuously since 1956. The Festival programme covers a wide range of contemporary music, embracing a variety of trends. These include radical sound, music inspired by traditional cultures and historical styles, audio art, and sound installations. The primary objective of the Festival is to showcase new world music in Poland and to promote Polish music on the international stage.

This year's “Warsaw Autumn” Music Festival focuses on the theme of the penetration of historical musical languages and sound phenomena belonging to different genres into contemporary music.

The Adam Mickiewicz Institute and the “Warsaw Autumn” Music Festival have commissioned composition of musical works

The Adam Mickiewicz Institute jointly with the ‘Warsaw Autumn’ Festival supported the creation of four new musical works. They were composed by: Katarina Gryvul, a Ukrainian composer residing in Poland and Austria, Arash Yazdani, an Iranian composer working in Estonia, Yurii Pikusha, a young Ukrainian composer, and Aleksandra Słyż, nominated for the 2024 award called “Polityka Weekly Passport”.

Basel Sinfonietta will give the premiere performance of works by Yuria Pikusha and Aleksandra Słyż during the "They and Us?" concert at the “Warsaw Autumn” Music Festival. The other two musical works composed by Katarina Gryvul and Arash Yazdani are designated for Ensemble Modern.

"They and Us?" - Basel Sinfonietta concert during the "Warsaw Autumn" Music Festival

On 22 September at 7.30 pm, the Witold Lutosławski Concert Studio on the Polish Radio premises will host the concert titled “They and Us?”.  Jointly with the Basel Sinfonietta, mezzo-soprano Christina Daletska and narrator Raphael Clamer will perform. The concert will be conducted by Titus Engel. The programme will include compositions by Yuria Pikush, Sergey Nevsky, Aleksandra Slyazh and Stefan Keller that will be performed for the first time.

The performance of works by Yurii Pikusha and Aleksandra Słyż during the concert at the “Warsaw Autumn” Music Festival is supported by the Adam Mickiewicz Institute.
