The next edition of the prestigious Biennale Noorderlicht, themed “Machine Entanglements”, will take place in Groningen, the Netherlands, from 12 July to 7 September 2025. Warsaw-based studio Noviki will present its installation “The Dream of the Machine” and invite visitors to the Future Fragments conference, co-organised with the Adam Mickiewicz Institute.
Technology, Nature, and Heritage – An Artistic Perspective on Complex Relationships
This year’s Noorderlicht Biennale explores the complex relationships between technology, ecology, and cultural heritage, raising questions about the impact of technological progress on the environment, society, and our collective memory. The full programme and details on participating in accompanying events are available at noorderlicht.com.
The biennale curators invite you to reflect on how technology shapes everyday life, landscapes, and the identity of modern humanity. At six locations in the north of the Netherlands – de Niemeyerfabriek, Tschumipaviljoen, Museum Dr8888, Museum Belvédère, Brouwerij Fortuna, and De Proef – works by artists are presented that explore the impact of technology on reality from diverse perspectives.
Polish Installation in the Netherlands at the Noorderlicht Biennale 2025
Poland will be represented at the Noorderlicht Biennale by Noviki – a studio founded by Marcin Nowicki and Katarzyna Nestorowicz, known for their post-critical approach to graphic design and their ongoing exploration of the boundaries of creative practice. The exhibition will feature the installation “The Dream of the Machine”. This project, which won the European Design Award in the digital installation category, presents a virtual garden – a landscape created in collaboration with artificial intelligence (AI). In this space, new forms emerge that are at once familiar and alien, poised on the border between the natural and the digitally generated.

A vast, panoramic screen surrounded by smaller projections draws viewers into a world where boundaries blur. Nature is not replaced by technology but transformed by it – as if the machine itself has begun to dream of life. Through these simultaneously playful and unsettling images, Studio Noviki suggests that the future is no longer separate from technology but deeply intertwined with it – like roots intertwining beneath the earth’s surface. The installation was originally created for BMW Art Club 2024 in collaboration with the Juliusz Słowacki Theatre in Kraków.
Future Fragments Conference – Art and AI in Dialogue
The Biennale is also accompanied by the Future Fragments conference, co-organised by the Adam Mickiewicz Institute. It will take place on 5–6 September 2025. This international artistic and academic event explores the relationship between artistic creation and artificial intelligence. It will also spotlight the work of selected Polish artists in the context of the technological themes they engage with. Studio Noviki also runs the platform FutureFragments, which hosts recorded talks and panel discussions on technology-related topics.
The aim of the Future Fragments conference is to create a space for the exchange of knowledge, experience, and reflection on contemporary creative practices in the age of new technologies. The two-day programme combines panel discussions, presentations of artistic projects, and networking activities. It forms part of a broader curatorial initiative focused on fostering dialogue and collaboration around the intersection of art and technology.
