Choreography and contemporary art at September Sessions in Stockholm
September Sessions – A Contemporary Art Festival in Stockholm – returns with a rich programme that spans various art spaces and public locations across the Swedish capital. The four-day programme features exhibitions, performances, concerts, film screenings, and meetings with artists. The festival celebrates the diversity of Stockholm’s contemporary art scene, while creating a platform for dialogue with international artists, transforming the city into a hub of creative energy for several days.
The programme includes a series of events organised by leading Swedish institutions, art spaces, and cultural initiatives, as well as a special curatorial programme prepared by the Berlin-based collective anorak. As part of the festival, Alex Baczyński-Jenkins will present his performance Malign Junction (Goodbye, Berlin). His artistic practice explores the complexities of desire, alienation, and relationality. Through choreographic methods, he examines subtle nuances of interdependence and suspended time, using a distinctive, embodied language, and minimalist, sensual visuals that move between the ephemeral and the structural.
Malign Junction (Goodbye, Berlin) at Moderna Dansteatern
Malign Junction (Goodbye, Berlin) is a choreographic performance devoted to the theme of finitude. It explores imprisonment, broken promises, loss, and movement in relation to power, at a time when humanity faces a confusing historical crossroads. The performance references Christopher Isherwood’s 1939 novel Goodbye to Berlin, set in the final days of Berlin’s nightlife and cabaret culture before the outbreak of World War II. During the performance, the stage becomes simultaneously a theatrical space, a mechanism of enslavement, an internal landscape of fragmentation, a club, and a waiting room. It features silent actors, a broken heart, a will to resist, mourning, ecstatic division, despair, and captured female dancers.
Performances of Malign Junction (Goodbye, Berlin) will take place at Moderna Dansteatern (MDT), a contemporary dance and performance theatre in Stockholm. MDT is one of Sweden’s most important venues for innovative choreography, performance art, and interdisciplinary artistic projects, supporting practices that challenge and expand the field of dance. The theatre and studios form the heart of the venue, and MDT co-produces and presents works by Swedish and international artists.
