Structure

On 1 July 2010, the Adam Mickiewicz Institute was reorganized according to a new matrix organizational structure to fit the specific nature of the Institute’s operations. The new structure enables effective project management and establishes conditions that are conducive to work across multiple disciplines. This modern approach allows us flexibility in managing our personnel and material resources as well as increasing motivation and maximizing opportunities for staff to acquire new skills.

A structure so closely tailored to the Institute’s operations guarantees the highest possible quality in the projects we conduct and translates to a high level of satisfaction among our partners.

The Institute functions in accordance with a Quality Management System compliant with ISO 9001:2008 requirements.

The council chairperson and its members are appointed by the Minister of Culture and National Heritage.

Head

Krzysztof Olendzki is a graduate at the History Department of the Warsaw University, and Ph.D. holder from the Historical Institute of the Polish Academy of Science, as well as from Scuola Superiore di Studi Storici dell'Università di San Marino where, in 1995, he defended his Ph.D. thesis.

He has worked at the PWN publishing house and at the PWN Science Publications. He was the editor of the encyclopaedia about Poland in English, titled Poland. An Encyclopaedic Guide. Krzysztof Olendzki also held the position of research assistant at the Archives of the Warsaw University and, later, of assistant professor at the Chair of Economic and Social History at the Warsaw School of Economics.

In the years 1998 – 1999, he acted as minister’s advisor at the Department of Western Europe of the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The following two years he spent as deputy director of the Polish Institute and the First Secretary at the Polish Embassy in Rome. Between 2001-2014, he held the function of advisor to the minister, first secretary and advisor at the Department of Foreign Policy Strategy and Planning at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In the years 2004-2006, he worked as advisor for political matters at the Polish Embassy in Tallinn. From December 2007 until September 2008, he was the deputy director at the Department of Public and Cultural Diplomacy of the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

In the period between January 2006 and December 2007, Krzysztof Olendzki held the function of undersecretary of state and the Polish Ministry of Culture and National Heritage, and from January 2007, he was also the government’s plenipotentiary for the Wrocław EXPO 2012 international exhibition.

Throughout the years 2008-2012, he performed the mission of Ambassador of the Republic of Poland in Tunisia and, after his return in 2012, he held the successive functions at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of deputy director at the Department of Development Aid, deputy director, and later director at the Department of Africa and the Middle East, as well as deputy director of the Office for Infrastructure at the Ministry.

From September 2014 he was Consul General of the Republic of Poland in Vancouver.

Krzysztof Olendzki has been awarded the Knight’s Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta, as well as the Commander’s Cross of the Order of the Republic of Tunisia. In the autumn of 2011, he was nominated Titular Ambassador.

Dariusz Sobkowicz is a culture manager, university lecturer, journalist, and a civil servant and holds a degree in Natural Philosophy. Since 2008, he has been the deputy director of the Adam Mickiewicz Institute. He began his career in public administration in 1993, when he became Deputy Director of the Department of Cultural Promotion at the Ministry of Culture and Art and, later, specialized in cultural management. He was twice the director of the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage, the first deputy director of the Polish National Opera, and Deputy Director at the Wilanów Palace Museum. He was awarded the Bronze Medal for Merit to Culture "Gloria Artis".

Deputy Director

Olga Wysocka is a political scientist and a culture manager. She has worked at the Adam Mickiewicz Institute since 2008, becoming its deputy director on August 1, 2014. Between 2009 and 2012, she was the manager of the International Cultural Programme of the Polish EU Presidency; the largest project to be undertaken by the Institute so far. She is currently also the manager of the project “Turkey” and will be carrying out both functions till the project’s completion.

She graduated from the Faculty of Political Science of the University of Warsaw. She studied at the Freie Universität Berlin (Free University of Berlin) and, between 2001 and 2004, worked at the Polish Institute in Berlin. She received her PhD in political science at the European University Institute in Florence with a dissertation on "Populism - The Polish Case". She is the winner of the Józef Tischner Fellowship from the Institute for Human Sciences in Vienna and has authored multiple articles and studies on populism, democracy and cultural promotion and management.

Minister’s Programmes Management Department is responsible for:

announcing and prosecuting submissions in form of the grant programme,
concluding and accounting? agreements with beneficiaries of the grants.

Subsidized projects shall form the artistic calendar containing events organised by the Adam Mickiewicz Institute and other institutions prepared for the centennial of the restoration of Poland's independence.

Administration Department is responsible for:

managing the assets of the Institute,
procuring, storing and distributing equipment and materials,
ensuring order and cleanliness in the offices, warehouses and sanitary and technical spaces,
providing efficient and trouble-free operation of technical and construction infrastructure as well as ensuring availability of stationery and telecommunication equipment,
keeping the archives,
fostering a safe and healthy work environment and fire prevention procedures at the Institute.

Knowledge Management Department

Knowledge Management Department is responsible for:

knowledge management for the needs of the Institute or third parties,
formulating rules for the collection and use of information within the Institute,
managing the knowledge bases of the Institute,
collecting, updating and managing the information on the Institute’s past, current and potential partners,
formulating recommendations for the Director of the Institute regarding strategic programs for the presence of Polish culture in the world,
monitoring and evaluating the strategy of the Institute in all its activities,
preparing analysis-based studies for the needs of the Institute and third parties,
collecting, archiving and distributing the documentation regarding the Institute’s activities.

Controlling Department is responsible for:

supervision of project planning in accordance with the Institute’s strategy,
monitoring the implementation and finances of projects,
analysing and monitoring risks related to projects and decision-making processes,

The What’s Next unit is an internal creative and programming project by the Adam Mickiewicz Institute, led by the Team of Experts. Its members are specialists in the area of visual arts; art and technology; film; theatre, dance and performing arts; contemporary music; and classical music. The team has a broad range of duties, including developing the programming concept for the Institute’s main activities; providing content support to selected major projects; content and organisational preparation of projects; and stimulating programming discussions within the Institute. The team also focuses on continuously expanding its knowledge of new cultural phenomena in Poland and around the world, and monitoring trends in particular areas, while establishing and developing a network of contacts with artists and cultural professionals.

Sharing knowledge is an important element of the team’s mission. Its members often take part in international panels, and are invited to present the Institute’s work. They also conduct a regular programme of internal meetings from the What’s Next series, creating opportunities to learn about the newest trends in culture at meetings with guests from around the world, and discussions about current cultural issues.

Points of Contact for “Culture” and "Europe for Citizens" function as part of the European Programmes Department. The Points of Contact are responsible for promoting the programs "Culture" and "Europe for Citizens", and making them more accessible to Polish applicants. Their objectives are implemented through:

conferences and participation in the events promoting potential foreign and international cooperation and the current European cultural and citizenship policy,
implementing training programs (workshops, information sessions, competency training and contact seminars for representatives of organizations and institutions),
publishing materials presenting good practices regarding international projects and those promoting Polish beneficiaries,
assistance in finding foreign partners for projects and preparing applications,
cooperation with points of contact in more than 35 countries, the European Commission and the Education, Audiovisual and Culture Executive Agency.
